Three of Swords

Guiding words/ideas:

The heart as strong despite its wounds; pain as a source of strength; encouragement to not avoid pain but to feel into it; depth of feeling as a catalyst for change; pain as a universal and potentially connecting experience.

Channeled guidance:

Even though this heart is pierced through three times, it appears to be strong. There is no blood seeping from the wounds. The color of the heart (created by beet root) is rich and saturated. The swords, even in their cruelty, have a sense of dignity. They’re clear and beautifully made.

The Three of Swords asserts that heartbreak and heart damage are real, true, painful, and can in themselves be a source of strength. Feeling pain does not point to weakness. It points to an openness in oneself, a willingness to be fully human and to be in one’s experience completely.

This card encourages us to not shy away from our pain but to allow it into our senses and to be with it. Stormy weather is suggested by images of a dark cloud and rain coming down, and there is no attempt for this heart to move out of the rain. It can feel the stormy weather. It can feel the pain. It can be with the elements. And it can be with its true nature—one of love, connection, and deep feelings.

When one feels into the depths of heartache, it can be a catalyst for change and an invitation for connection with all other beings. All beings experience pain. All beings have the capacity for love, and all beings ache in their hearts. So allow yourself to feel the pain and know that it won’t always be there. These wounds will heal. They may leave scars; they may change one’s heart; but they will allow for an experience that is complex and full and, in its own particular way, beautiful.

Plant and metal guidance:

Beet root (red heart): We reach down into the soil and encourage you to do so as well. Our rich color and earthy smell can keep you grounded and feeling secure and stable.

Acorn cap (grey sword blades): Like a gentle pat on the head, we offer up slow-moving energy to open the senses and awaken the mind.

Black walnut (dark brown cloud): The strength of our magic lies in our ability to clear space and provide opportunities for recharging and resetting.

Logwood (dark blue in background): Our color connects outwardly but its source lies deep within. We help you reach inside yourself to find strength and beauty.

Copper oxide (light blue in background): I magnify the properties of whatever plants I touch or impact.
